My Future and Independence Skills

Traditionally, schools refer to “Careers Education.” However, at Kestrel House School we use the term My Future and Independence Skills, as we believe this better reflects the needs, strengths and aspirations of our learners.

Our pupil’s preparation for adulthood is not simply about employment. It is about building independence, communication, confidence and life skills that will support them in all aspects of their future. “My Future and Independence Skills” recognises that every small step towards independence is significant and meaningful.

This area of learning is delivered through practical, hands-on experiences that are embedded into everyday school life. Pupils take part in structured activities such as food preparation, horticulture, enterprise projects, classroom jobs, site responsibilities and community visits. These experiences are carefully supported using visual timetables, clear routines, sensory regulation strategies and personalised communication systems so that every pupil can access and succeed.

Through these activities, pupils develop important lifelong skills such as:

  • Following routines and instructions
  • Making choices and expressing preferences
  • Working alongside others
  • Developing independence in personal care and daily living
  • Managing change and transitions
  • Building confidence in community settings

We work closely with families, therapists and professionals to ensure that each pupil’s My Future and Independence Skills pathway links directly to their EHCP outcomes and long-term aspirations. Progress is personalised and celebrates small but important achievements that move pupils closer to greater independence and participation in their community.

By framing careers education as My Future and Independence Skills, we place the focus where it belongs — on helping every young person build a fulfilling, supported and meaningful future.

Choosing which direction to take after leaving school is a big decision.
